I witnessed an accident on my way to work today and I was only about ten cars away from it. It is amazing how I just drove through about ten minutes after it happened. I went about my day without almost another thought about it. Those people didn’t. Their entire lives changed from one accident. They may be hurt, they may sustain life long injuries, they may not be able to drive their cars again, they may not be able to afford to pay their insurance anymore. Who knows what will come of it, but their lives surely changed and I got to just drive through. I saw an accident about three months ago, well the aftermath actually, and it made me burst out in tears. I saw a man lying on the ground with EMTs around him trying to get him to breathe. Today’s accident wasn’t quite that bad, well that terminally bad, but I know no one died immediately because of this accident. That man though, three months ago, I think about him sometimes. Did he make it? Was he just on his way to work too? Who did he leave behind?

I am thankful that I did make it to work today and I am glad I made it back too.

I was enroute to a cruise once when traffic stopped. We were sitting there not movie for two full hours. We were bitching and moaning and getting all worked up because we thought we would miss the boat. Then a coroner’s van drove by on the way to the accident. That changed everything.

If only I had kicked the ball a nanosecond earlier or later, I wouldn’t have broken my ankle. But I did, and that’s the way my life unfolded. It is so odd when you get that close to a crash, and odd to think of how many happened right after you passed by that you’ll never know about.

Just drive safe and wear your seat belt!
