Football season is under way and I’m not watching any of it. I suppose on the surface it can be easily explained, Brady’s out for the season. Or last season was such a major disappointment I’m just not over it yet. Or my heart’s just not into it anymore. Admittedly, it is the latter.
I caught about four minutes of tonights game between the Eagles and the Cowboys. At the looks of things it was measuring up to be a pretty exciting Monday night game… but it held no interest for me like it did last year, and the year before, and the years before. Football’s my thing, it always has been but this year I’m not sure what my thing is anymore.
Why is it so easy for some to just lay their cards on the table, why do some just fold and walk away? Am I leaving when the deck is hot, or should I cash in? Why do I suddenly want to YouTube The Gambler?

“Help! I’m in a nutshell!”
February 4th, 2008
I had this whole past weekend off and it was so nice. It has been quite a while since I actually had a real person’s weekend off, Saturday and Sunday. And of course it was all for the Superbowl, but, well, we all know what happened there. My official stand on it: I didn’t actually get all that upset. Bottom line, we didn’t play well enough to win. We had a great season and you can’t take that away. As for Eli Manning and the Giants, I say good for them. There are so many other teams who I would have rather not lost to, is he as good as his brother? No. Is he as good as Ben Roethlisberger was his Superbowl year? Ben isn’t even as good as he was during his Superbowl year. Did the Giants achieve greatness. Only history will tell. Most years I kind of go into depression after football season, but this year is a little different. I think we need some time apart.
Mike and I had date night on Saturday. Actually it started on Saturday afternoon when he took me to “his” stylist and I got my hair cut. Yes, that’s right. Should I worry? He has a stylist and he quotes Tim Gunn from Project Runway (a show he refused to watch with me until his bff at work told him that it was a good show; bff is a man:) Anyhow. My hair came out awesome, I must say and it is the haircut I’ve been asking stylists to give me for almost 5 years but never could quite get. Love it. Then we went for dinner at Firebird’s and it’s a great place to go because the food is good and you know exactly what you are going to get, no surprises but that’s a good thing sometimes. It’s at my fave shopping place on the planet, La Encantada, and I even got Mike to go into the Coach store with me and now I want this

But that’s neither here nor there. We had a phenomenal date night, and it didn’t end with me acting like a rock star pissing someone off, or starting a fight with Mike for some pent up aggression reasons. It was just plain wonderful.
I saw SuperBad for the first time last night. Hilar!
I’m going to make eye glass chains and I’m going to rock one soon. I’m not kidding, look for them soon in my shop. And you think I won’t do it. They have actually been requested.
And now because I don’t do this and I should more often:

I would be lying if I said I wasn’t ecstatic that the Pats are going to the Superbowl, but not as ecstatic for the fact that we aren’t going to have to beat Brett Favre. As much as I admire Eli Manning’s tenacity, I won’t mind knocking him off his sophomoric pedestal. He’s got lots of years ahead of him. With that said, I’m sure that Brett will be bidding ado.
Do we need another Superbowl win? I suppose that is the question. Will that finally solidify our stake in dynasty legacy? A lot of people look at the Patriots with disdain, hate, and jealousy but let’s look at what makes the Patriots great. It’s in the way that their legacy began. It begin with a sixth round draft pick, cast offs, players other teams gave up, fans who believed in them even when they were the joke of the league. And that is the foundation on which they kept building on. They took in players who no one wanted, focused on special teams and on not promoting one player above another. Tom Brady could utilize a buffet of receivers, coaches encouraged the strengths of the players, and owners allowed decisions to be made in camp and not from above. These are the things that built this dynasty. Come February 3rd, win or lose, this is what will be remembered about these New England Patriots.
I’m up for another win.

I’m not going to talk about football today, although, how excited am I that NFL Gameday is on every night this week (Deion Sanders is my favorite football personality, well, next to Troy Aikman, but he’s just nice to look at.) Anyhow, no football right.
Today was one of those days off where my head is filled with one million and one things I could get accomplished and in reality I get one of those things done. Actually I got a few things done I’ve been meaning to for a bit. I did do a bit of Spring cleaning on my wardrobe. Spring cleaning, but it’s January. The seasons change pretty quick in the desert. Anyhow, I let go of some things I’ve been holding onto and I feel really free now. That and my clean laundry won’t spend a week on the dining room table because it is so hard to find a place for it in my closet and drawers. When I let my laundry sit on the dining room table, Mike thinks that it is okay to do the same, and often likes to think of the dining room table as his closet and will dress from head to toe from the table. I know, strange. But I did bring four trash bags to the Salvation Army and selectively chose the best for a very special recipient. I know four trash bags. But in all honesty I haven’t gone completely bonkers-clothes shopping in about 8 months. I guess I was just holding on to some things thinking that I may want them some day. It made it easier saying goodbye to those things today mostly just because I was sick and tired of looking at it, and then for some, I can’t wish for my body to ever fit into those things again. Better to just send them away.
I had to go to the post office today, international shipment to Canada (Canadians love the Booty ), and I always come out of the post office with a wider view of the world and its people. People must not be able to bring themselves to be patient inside the post office. Perhaps only inpatient people use the post office. I think there needs to be a sign outside the post office that reads, “This will take a long time so just shut up and deal with it.” Maybe this will help. I am one of those weird people who are polite to the postal workers, talk to them in a nice tone, ask them how their day is. And I know when they answer me they are lying. They aren’t having a good day because they probably had 100 people be rude to them all day. And tomorrow will be just the same. But I like them and they are nice to me. I got Stan today and he’s cool, really low key and has a Georgian accent. The lady that usually helps me, real nice lady, waved at me and said hello. I think that made the inpatient people nervous and confused. Although there was no real altercation at the post office today, I’m sure there is one brewing for the near future. I just hope I’m there to see it.
Tara’s Chicken Dinner tonight. That’s not really a secret recipe, but it is one of my staples and really must be sampled to understand it. I never knew white gravy existed until I moved to the southwest and I never knew it could be so good until I tried it. I love it! And I know how terribly bad it is for you, so I don’t make it all of the time, once in a blue moon. Oh, and Prison Break starts up tonight again. If you haven’t watched that show, and I didn’t until the second season, heck, you don’t know what you’re missing. Good stuff people. I’ve got the first season on DVD if anyone is interested. Great story line, super suspense and lots of hot eye candy… did I mention the story lines are good too?

Told you.

I did exactly what I wanted today, sat in my football recliner, watched the games, napped, ate chicken wings and didn’t dress or shower. How perfect was that? The only thing that would have made it better was if the chicken wings drove to my door, the toilet was in the living room and the Pats played today. They play next weekend.
I’ve watched football since the womb. I also saw Jaws in the theater, in the womb, and that may be why it is one of my favorite movies and/or why I am not afraid of scary movies. Neither here nor there. Loving football isn’t ironic for me, or a fleeting interest. It’s part of my inner fabric; part of what makes me who I am. I understand it, feel it and need it. Sounds crazy, but there is something like that in your life too, like air or water, say?
During football season I usually view about 6 games every Sunday fully and then Monday night, of course. I watch my favorite highlight show all Sunday night, even though it’s just replayed every hour and a half. I know players and coaches names, stats, where they played college, how long they’ve been around, and if they ever pulled their groin. Is football just for men? I hate that perception and I hate the perception that it is a novelty for a women to like sports. For me, loving football was something I was raised with, like good morals, good nutrition, Barbie dolls and frilly dresses.
Funny story, the first real fight my husband I ever had was over a football game. We were dating at the time and on our way to somewhere. I was driving and I turned on the radio, the Pats were playing. Mike went to touch the dial and I yelled, “I just want to hear the kick off!” “Hear the kick off?” Yeah. He couldn’t understand why that was important to me. It took a couple of years but he’s come around. He’s a die-hard fan now too. People need to come around in their own time, you can’t force liking sports on to someone. They either love it or hate it, I’ve never really met anyone in between.
With that said I’ve got another half to play here in Pittsburgh, it’s just started to rain and the terrible towels are flying. I’m rooting for Jacksonville.
