I would be lying if I said I wasn’t ecstatic that the Pats are going to the Superbowl, but not as ecstatic for the fact that we aren’t going to have to beat Brett Favre.  As much as I admire Eli Manning’s tenacity, I won’t mind knocking him off his sophomoric pedestal.  He’s got lots of years ahead of him.  With that said, I’m sure that Brett will be bidding ado.

Do we need another Superbowl win?  I suppose that is the question.  Will that finally solidify our stake in dynasty legacy?  A lot of people look at the Patriots with disdain, hate, and jealousy but let’s look at what makes the Patriots great.  It’s in the way that their legacy began.  It begin with a sixth round draft pick, cast offs, players other teams gave up, fans who believed in them even when they were the joke of the league.  And that is the foundation on which they kept building on.  They took in players who no one wanted, focused on special teams and on not promoting one player above another.  Tom Brady could utilize a buffet of receivers, coaches encouraged the strengths of the players, and owners allowed decisions to be made in camp and not from above.  These are the things that built this dynasty.  Come February 3rd, win or lose, this is what will be remembered about these New England Patriots.

I’m up for another win.

The little Eli who could

January 13th, 2008

I like that Eli Manning and the Giants beat the Cowboys. I like that no one thought that he could lead his team to this victory. I like that he is Peyton’s kid brother and probably isn’t the star of the family. I like that he proved everyone wrong and took this win away from the popular kid, big man of campus, Tony Romo. And with all of this talk of Tony taking the past week off, vacationing in Cabo with dummy, Jessica Simpson. What do you think Eli did? He focused, he studied the films, he dug deep inside himself and brought everything he had to the table. Tony didn’t. TO did, unfortunately it was all too late and turning his leaves didn’t turn out to change his destiny.

Will Eli and his Giants be victorious over Brett and his Packers? Well, that’s another game on another day. Tom and his Pats will be glad to beat either team.

Here’s one day for the underdog.

Patriots beat the Jaguars, beer and pizza, Mike and me on the couch with two kitties… doesn’t get better than that.

Wild Card Weekend

I did exactly what I wanted today, sat in my football recliner, watched the games, napped, ate chicken wings and didn’t dress or shower. How perfect was that? The only thing that would have made it better was if the chicken wings drove to my door, the toilet was in the living room and the Pats played today. They play next weekend.

I’ve watched football since the womb. I also saw Jaws in the theater, in the womb, and that may be why it is one of my favorite movies and/or why I am not afraid of scary movies. Neither here nor there. Loving football isn’t ironic for me, or a fleeting interest. It’s part of my inner fabric; part of what makes me who I am. I understand it, feel it and need it. Sounds crazy, but there is something like that in your life too, like air or water, say?

During football season I usually view about 6 games every Sunday fully and then Monday night, of course. I watch my favorite highlight show all Sunday night, even though it’s just replayed every hour and a half. I know players and coaches names, stats, where they played college, how long they’ve been around, and if they ever pulled their groin. Is football just for men? I hate that perception and I hate the perception that it is a novelty for a women to like sports. For me, loving football was something I was raised with, like good morals, good nutrition, Barbie dolls and frilly dresses.

Funny story, the first real fight my husband I ever had was over a football game. We were dating at the time and on our way to somewhere. I was driving and I turned on the radio, the Pats were playing. Mike went to touch the dial and I yelled, “I just want to hear the kick off!” “Hear the kick off?” Yeah. He couldn’t understand why that was important to me. It took a couple of years but he’s come around. He’s a die-hard fan now too. People need to come around in their own time, you can’t force liking sports on to someone. They either love it or hate it, I’ve never really met anyone in between.

With that said I’ve got another half to play here in Pittsburgh, it’s just started to rain and the terrible towels are flying. I’m rooting for Jacksonville.
